Kseniya Hornby

I moved to deepen my Yoga practice some 8 years ago when I recognised how much it helped me on a physical level to feel healthy and connect to myself through movement, breath, mantra and meditation.

I soon learned how much inspriation, joy and calm it was bringing to my life and Yoga soon became a part of my daily routine.  I now strive to learn more, practice more and share with others the benefits I have discovered.

My favourite style of Yoga is Vinyasa.  I love both slow and gentle flows, as well as the dynamic and strong ones, all of which are synchronised with steady breathing.  As one of my Yoga teachers would say, “Dancing with your breath” and following the rhythms of nature.

I enjoy combining stretching, strengthening, breathing and relaxation techniques in my sessions, so as to increase the benefits of the practice for both the body and the mind.

Yoga can recalibrate and rebalance us on so many levels, especially emotionally, and that is what I hope my students will take away from my classes.  The release of tension in the body through movement, calming the nerves through breathing and focus, and finding stillness and happiness through relaxation.

I strongly believe that Yoga is a journey inwards, raising your awareness of your own body and introducing yourself to yourself.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE POSE?

ONE OF MY FAVOURITE POSES IS DANCER (NATARAJASANA) AS IT INVOLVES YOUR WHOLE BODY AND MIND – YOU CALM YOUR NERVES TO BE ABLE TO FOCUS AND HOLD THE STANDING BALANCE, YOU OPEN YOUR SHOULDERS AND HIP FLEXORS, YOU STRETCH YOUR HAMSTRINGS AND OPEN THE SIDE BODY.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE YOGA MYTH OR LEGEND?

“Yoga is nothing more than stretching”. Whilst yoga involves so many elements, the physical aspect (Asana) will include stretching of the muscles, back and hip mobility exercises, strengthening of the core, legs, back, upper body, as well as balance and posture improvement practices.

WHAT MUSIC WILL I HEAR IN YOUR CLASS?

IN MY CLASSES YOU WILL HEAR VARIOUS MUSIC STYLES DEPENDING ON THE PRACTICE AND THE MOOD OF THE DAY – ANYTHING TO HELP FEEL BOTH REVIVED AND CHILLED, FROM RELAXING MEDITATION AND YOGIC TUNES TO MODERN POP ROCK, INDIE POP AND OTHERS.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO WHEN YOU ARE NOT ON THE MAT OR TEACHING?

I LOVE WALKS IN NATURE, ADMIRING THE SEASCAPES AND SUNSET VIEWS.  ENJOYING CONVERSATIONS AND GIGGLES OVER MEALS OR TEA BREAKS WITH DEAREST FRIENDS OR FAMILY IS ALSO A FAVOURITE ACTIVITY OF MINE.  I AM ALSO A PROUD PARENT OF 3 CATS, SO I LOVE SOME CAT CUDDLES EVERY NOW AND THEN.

IF YOU WERE GOING TO BE STRANDED ON A REMOTE ISLAND, WHAT 3 THINGS WOULD YOU WANT TO TAKE WITH YOU?

  1. A SUITCASE WITH A FEW BOOKS
  2. A CAMERA
  3. A STASH OF DARK CHOCOLATE.  I COULD THEN LOSE MYSELF IN BOOKS, PRACTISE YOGA IN NATURE, ADMIRE THE VIEWS, CAPTURE THEM ON MY CAMERA AND ALSO TREAT MYSELF TO SOME BITTER SWEETNESS.

WHAT IS A ‘FUN FACT’ ABOUT YOU?

I CAN’T RIDE A BIKE DESPITE VARIOUS PEOPLE TRYING TO TEACH ME HOW TO OVER THE YEARS!

I started practicing Yoga in my teens – I think I was mostly attracted to the challenge and excitement of difficult poses at that time. As my practice grew, I developed an appreciation for a simpler and softer approach.
